Nāpo‘opo‘o

Nāpo‘opo‘o, located in Waipi‘o valley in the Hamākua district on the island of Hawai‘i, is our traditional farming demonstration site. Here at Nāpo‘opo‘o we are able to teach the practice of kalo farming. Kalo or taro is one of the staple foods of our people and is an integral part of our life. Here at Nāpo‘opo‘o we have restored several traditional Lo‘i or taro fields, which are irrigated from the nearby Hi‘ilawe river. It takes 1.5 hours to get from Hilo to Nāpo‘opo‘o, using this site usually involves spending an entire day there.
