Taking care of the ‘Ōpelu

Retold by Keonaona Kapuni-Reynolds

The menehune were fishing all night and before dawn broke they stood around their catch. They decided that they would dry the fish in the upcoming night. However they left to guards there to watch the fish and they heard some weird sounds, just like whispering and rocks being dragged about. Where are those sounds coming from?

In a cave in the mountain lived evil spirits. And that noise was a multitude of them coming down to steal the menehune’s fish. When the guards saw this, they woke up all the menehune and they all had a meeting to see how they would stop the evil spirits from stealing their fish.

And then the king said, “Let us dig into the cave and beat all the evil spirits without them knowing.” They started to dig into the mountain and as they reached the place where the evil spirits were coming, they waited for the spirits to immerse.

When the evil spirits came out they beat them each individually before they could steal any of the fish. This is how the menehune took care of their fish from the evil spirits. That was a lot of work.

Oh how delicious is the belly,
Rich belly of the pilot fish,
Oily good to swallow,
Bonefish to slurp the gravy,
Scad fish to dunk with.
Delicious, my, my, to swallow in your throat
Delicious delicious real delicious
(Just delicious) just delicious.
