The Pualu that Worked Together

By Keonaona Kapuni-Reynolds

For some of you, you don’t know the difference between the Pualu and the Palani. This is how you can tell, when you look at the Pualu he has a white mark near his tail, the Palani however has a yellow and blue tail. This is how you can tell the difference.

In this story the fish were playing on two teams. The Pualu on one side and the Palani on the other side. They were playing with limu. One piece of Līpe‘epe‘e seaweed was floating in the ocean and both of the teams were trying to grab the limu and take it to their side of the coral reef.

One of the fish grabbed the limu and held it in his mouth and swam for one side and then another fish quickly stole it. They weren’t playing as a team. They were each playing for their own benefit.

Not one of the fish knew how they were going to start winning if they didn’t work together. When the first half of the game was done, the Pualu huddled together and they were all grumbling about each other. On the other side the Palani were all grumbling about each other. Until one of the Pualu decided that they should all work together. When the bell rang for the second half they all started to run for the limu. One of the Pualu’s got the limu and he started to swim for the other side and all the other Pualu’s helped by blocking the Palani from the Pualu with the limu. When one of the Pualu was in trouble, he let go of the limu so it floated close to the mouth of another Pualu and that is how they won.

The Puala saw that if they worked together, it was easier to win as a team.
