V. Plants of the Ocean Side Land

The land and the ocean is often talked about in Hawaiian texts as one continuous mass, and it is the kuleana of man to mālama i ka ‘āina. The plants of the coastline play an integral role in the healthy maintenance of the marine life. The Kumulipo lists many different plant life as being guardians of those organisms of the ocean, hence, a continuous connection between land life and ocean life. This section will explore projects that focused on coastal plants and gardens one of which is the most primary coastal plant of all, that being the niu (coconut).
