Makawalu Visual Arts School is an extension of the traditions of the Hālau O Kekuhi and focuses on Art as a vehicle for seeing our natural environment through many different eyes. EKF has held a vision of a Fine Arts program which weaves together modern and traditional art through the hands on experience of visual art materials and Hawaiian cultural practices. Makawalu Visual Arts School is designed to offer a progressively deeper understanding of Hawaiian literature, chants and language as well as creating a vehicle through which the individual can connect to the family, community and our environment.

The goals of the Makawalu Visual Arts School are:

  1. to heighten Hawaiian cultural and environmental consciousness through visual arts and indigenous Hawaiian cultural practices,
  2. to expose our rural community by establishing artistic and creative skill building activities for children, youth, adults and elders,
  3. to serve the local citizens in providing learning that will connect the community of Keaukaha with other communities, cultures and visually artistic peoples
