"Uwolani" CD

Uwolani Cover"A recording of traditional chants featuring both solo and group performances of oli (chants not danced to) and mele hula (rhythmic poems favorable for dancing). A 28-page CD booklet provides Hawaiian lyrics, English translations and powerful imagery. Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner for "Haku Mele" (best composition in the Hawaiian language) and "Best Hawaiian Language Performance."
Before the introduction of melodic, western-style singing and foreign instruments, Hawaiian music consisted of oli (chants not danced to) and mele hula (chants that were danced to, often accompanied by implements). These chants were the vehicles for a rich oral tradition. The art of Oli and Mele Hula has been handed down to Halau o Kekuhi through many generations and they share some of their time honored repertoire on this award winning recording."
